Omaha Hi/Lo Short Description
Omaha Hi/Lo 8 or Better accommodates 2 to 10 players and has surged in popularity, not just in the United States but in other countries too, primarily because of its intricate rules and demanding strategy.
A game of Omaha Hi/Lo is structured around four rounds of betting. Initially, after Blind Bets are made (refer to the section on The Blind Bets for insights), each participant is dealt four facedown 'Pocket Cards'. Additionally, five 'Community Boardcards' are revealed in the center, which all players can use.
Upon completing the final betting round, the game reaches a 'Showdown'. Here, the two contenders who form the best higher-ranking and lower-ranking hands (no card should exceed the value of eight) using a combination of two of their own Pocket Cards and three Community Boardcards split the pot evenly (if one player holds both the highest and lowest hand, they take the entire pot).

Omaha Hi/Lo Step-by-Step
Step 1: The Blind Bets
- The player sitting immediately to the left of the Dealer begins the game by placing the 'Small Blind' Bet, which is set at half the table’s minimum stake (for tables with stakes exceeding $1, the Small Blind is adjusted to the nearest dollar).
- Next, the player following the Small Blind in a clockwise direction bets the 'Big Blind', which equals the full value of the table's minimum stake.
Step 2: The Pocket Cards - The First Deal
- The Dealer then distributes four concealed 'Pocket Cards' to each player in a clockwise manner, commencing from the player next to the Big Blind.
Step 3: The First Betting Round
Betting Limit: Lower Limit Stake
- The very first player to the left of the Big Blind kicks off the initial Betting Round (more details can be found in the Betting Rounds & Limits section). The betting continues clockwise, requiring each player to at least 'Call' the Big Blind if they wish to stay in the hand, with bets adhering to the table's minimum stake.
Step 4: \"The Flop\" - The Second Deal
- The Dealer reveals the first three 'Community Boardcards' facing up in the center of the table for all players to use.
Step 5: The Second Betting Round
Betting Limit: Lower Limit Stake
- The next Betting Round commences with the first active player to the left of the Dealer. This phase proceeds in a clockwise fashion, with each active player making their moves in turn, continuing with bets at the table’s minimum stake.
Step 6: \"The Turn\" - The Third Deal
- Following this, the Dealer presents the fourth Community Boardcard, which is also placed face-up on the table.
Step 7: The Third Betting Round
Betting Limit: Higher Limit Stake
- The next Betting Round is initiated by the first active player to the left of the Dealer again, following the same clockwise pattern as before, with this round increasing to the table’s higher limit stake for betting.
Step 8: 'The River' – This refers to the fourth and final community card deal.
- The Dealer then places a fifth Community Boardcard in the center, face-up, available for all players.
Step 9: The Fourth and Final Betting Round will take place here.
Betting Limit: Higher Limit Stake
- The initial active player to the left of the Dealer starts the fourth Betting Round. Like previous rounds, this too follows a clockwise order, and the betting in this round adheres to the table's higher limit stake.
Step 10: The Showdown
- After completing the fourth Betting Round, the game proceeds to a 'Showdown' provided multiple players are still engaged (details on The Showdown can be found below). During this phase, every active player combines any two of their four Pocket Cards and any three from the five Community Boardcards to form:
- The lowest possible five-card Poker hand where no card is beyond the value of eight (for details, refer to the Poker Hand Ranking Chart on this site);
Or - The best possible five-card Poker hand;
Or - Both the best and the lowest possible Poker hands.
- The lowest possible five-card Poker hand where no card is beyond the value of eight (for details, refer to the Poker Hand Ranking Chart on this site);
- The two active players achieving the highest and lowest ranking hands respectively will split the pot 50%-50%, deducting the rake (more information can be found in the following section). Limits, Antes & Rake in the how to play section of this site).
- If a single player is fortunate enough to possess both the highest and lowest hands, that individual is awarded the entire pot, minus any All-in Pots and the rake.
- In the case where there isn't a qualifying low hand (no cards exceeding the value of eight), the player with the highest rank of hands takes the entire pot, minus the All-in Pots and rake.
