Explanation of Downcard
Unlike some other poker formats, Stud games do not utilize community cards except for one specific case, which can be found in the glossary under community cards. This doesn’t imply that there aren’t any cards that everyone at the table can see, however. Players receive a mix of upcards and downcards as they progress through seven distinct betting rounds in a stud hand. Though upcards are exclusive to the player they are dealt to, making them unusable by others, they are still visible to all players at the table.
During the initial betting phase, referred to as third street, players are given two downcards along with one upcard. Following this, on the fourth, fifth, and sixth streets, players receive one additional upcard each time. The last card, which is dealt on the seventh street, or ‘the river’, is also a downcard. Therefore, a total of seven cards are dealt to each player throughout the hand (assuming they don’t fold), comprising 3 downcards and 4 upcards. upcard Typically, Stud hands can be represented in a particular format where the downcards are displayed within parentheses, such as (xx)xxxx(x).

Integrating Downcards into Your Poker Tactics
Downcards bear similarity to hole cards in Hold'em; they are meant to be concealed and should not be revealed to any opponents seated at the table.
Since downcards remain hidden from view, they can create an impression of a deceptively strong hand. If our hand’s strength relies mainly on these downcards , we may judge our hand to be more powerful than it appears at first glance.
Conversely, if the primary components of our hand strength are comprised of upcards, the perceived strength of our hand diminishes, as we inadvertently communicate a portion of our strength through those visible cards. Opponents might recognize our stronger hand, which could lead them to hesitate in calling our bets. If they do choose to engage, we may question their willingness to invest heavily in the pot, given the apparent strength of our upcards, as it might suggest they hold an even stronger hand.
