Determining the optimal play on the river in card games like Hold'em and Omaha frequently depends on how many failed draws exist in the possible hands of either player. This can be assessed by analyzing the board board texture: some textures will present significantly more failed draws than others.
In scenarios where the board contains a high number of missed draws, even hands with marginal showdown value can be advantageous—there's a good chance to win the pot if our opponent has also missed their draw. Conversely, when the river completes a multitude of draws, hands with limited showdown value diminish in strength. It's more probable that our opponent has successfully completed their draw, or at the very least, has formed a pair.
Consider the following board texture along with two possible river cards. The first river option essentially results in no busted draws, while the second allows for numerous missed draws.

It's accurate to say our opponent might not always hold a straight or flush after River 1, but typically, draws that fall short on the river still improve to at least a pair of Tens. Consequently, a hand like ace-high has a greater chance of winning on River 2 compared to River 1.
